New Orleans :: Hurricane Katrina Disaster Relief Trip 2

April 24th, 2006 — 7:19pm

Hello all. Yes, I know…this is like…almost two months overdue. What can I say? I’m a busy girl.

108 people (both students and staff) from Campus Crusade left the Rutgers Student Center parking lot on Friday March 10th and drove in two charter buses about 27 hours down to New Orleans, Lousiana (from here on named NOLA). Here are some selections from my journal written during that week (you didn’t think I’d write everything from my journal here, did you? :-) ). Yes, I know it’s really long…but this really is actually a condensed version. So read it. I promise to make it worth your while. I will split each day up into a separate post since it’s so long. I would suggest starting on the March 10th entry and working through it all chronologically.

But first…here are some facts about the week and our relief efforts as a whole.
In St. Bernard Parish there were 60, 000 people. 40,000 structures (only 1 of which was not considered a complete loss).
Up until 2 weeks prior to our stay, 100 homes were gutted. After the week directly prior to our stay, that number doubled with the 1000 students doing relief work. This week…there were over 4000 students (over four times the prior week). As a whole, we cleaned out over 800 homes, schools, churches, and even a grocery store.

Can I get an amen? :-)
